After receiving reader feedback and going through editorial review, we have redacted this column and cover graphic. We realize that the combination of the two stigmatizes people of color and contributes to the reinforcement of stereotypes.

We adhere to the code of ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists, a tenet of which is to minimize harm, and the impact of this piece failed to do so.
