Women’s Basketball
Last Thursday, the Weber State women’s basketball team traveled to Flagstaff, Arizona, where they beat Northern Arizona University 76-55.
Sophomore Kallie Quinn broke the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome record for 3-point shots attempted/made in a single game. Quinn shot 7-14, making a total of 26 points and a new career high.
Senior Brittney Dunbar also broke the Skydome record, as well as a Weber State record, for her 11 steals against the Lumberjacks.
Freshman Emily Drake was the second-highest scorer of the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds earning her first double-double of the season.
Following the victory in Flagstaff, the team traveled to Cedar City, Utah, where they beat Southern Utah University 70-51 Saturday afternoon.
Dunbar put up a total of 19 points, a new career high. Dunbar was 6-11 from the field and shot a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line. Dunbar also had five steals and six assists during the game.
Drake beat her new career best of 12 points by putting up 15 points at SUU.
The Wildcats are now 6-2 in the Big Sky Conference and 14-5 in the overall season. WSU will host Northern Colorado at home on Thursday night.
Track and Field
While many of the Wildcat track and field athletes were competing at the Weber State Indoor Invitational, senior Jamie Stokes, junior Hailey Whetten and junior Ellie Child traveled to Seattle, Washington, where they competed in the Washington Husky Invitational in distance running.
Stokes, who currently held the Weber State women’s record for the mile run at 4:43.12, broke her own record with a time of 4:37.47. Stokes’ time is currently the second-fastest time in the Big Sky Conference history. For her efforts, Stokes was named the Big Sky Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Child and Whetten both competed in the 3,000 meter race in Seattle. Child’s time of 9:33.95 qualified her for the Big Sky Conference Championship meet and currently is the third-fastest time in the conference. Whetten ran a time of 9:50.04.
Tennis
The Weber State women’s tennis team competed in Las Vegas this weekend where they fell short to New Mexico State, 5-2. The team is now 0-4 in non-conference play. There are three more non-conference meets, including one home meet on Feb. 14 against Iowa State before conference play begins on Feb. 20 in North Dakota.
In the singles matchup, senior Agata Bachanek beat the competition with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. Her teammate, sophomore Dominque Beauvals, also dominated the court beating her opponent 7-5, 0-1 before the match ended due to an NMSU injury.
The men’s tennis team competed in Salt Lake City where they lost 4-2 to the University of Utah. The men are now 0-2 for the season.
In the singles match up, senior Todd Fought came out on top of his competitor 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Stefan Cooper also emerged victorious against his opponent 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot.
For their next meet, they will travel to Las Vegas to fight against New Mexico State, Riverside and UNLV before opening their Big Sky Conference season at WSU on Feb. 12.
