Despite injuries, the Wildcats came away from the Colorado College Invitational tournament with a 1-1 record this weekend.

The Wildcats began their tournament facing host Colorado College, in which they fell in a 5-2 blowout by the Tigers. The team was down six starters at the beginning of the game. They played valiantly for much of the game, though troubles increased when another player left due to injury. The athletic department does not release the name of injured players so that they can be protected from further injury in later games.

Colorado College made four of their five goals within a nine-minute span during the second half of play.

The Wildcats were not able to score until 21 minutes left in the game, when sophomore forward Lana Willard made a 25-yard shot. Junior defender Brecken Holbrook added another goal seven minutes before the game ended off of an assist from senior midfielder Kendra Smith.

On Sunday, the Wildcats came out and played with the possibility of two substitutes and dug down deep to beat the New Mexico Lobos 2-1.

“I’m extremely proud of how our players represented Weber State athletics today,” said head coach Tim Crompton. “They could have laid down and made excuses, however they stood tall and brought it for 90 minutes.”

The Wildcats started early in the game when freshman midfielder Taryn Davies darted a shot forward off of a Mackenzie Harrison assist in the sixth minute of the game. This goal was monumental for Davies, as this was the first goal she has made in her collegiate career.

The Lobos responded in short order, when Lobos junior midfielder Lindsey Guice scored the equalizing shot from nine yard out in the ninth minute.

“The goal was a result of hard work from the team winning it back after we lost possession,” Harrison said in a statement. “Everyone stepped up today and never gave up the whole 90 minutes. I was super proud of our team.”

Harrison saw an opportunity to continue her offensive prowess, as she made a low 25 yard shot off of an assist by Kendra Smith later in the match to help seal the deal for the Wildcats and sent them home on a positive note.

The Wildcats are now 3-2-0 on the season with the results from this weekend. Though none of the games have been in-conference games, the Wildcats have moved on to be undefeated against the Mountain West Conference standing at 2-0.

This weekend the Wildcats will host Hawaii on Friday at 3 p.m. at the soccer field, and will then move on to  host UTEP Sunday at noon.
