In their second match of the season Friday afternoon, the Weber State women’s soccer team scored early and often as they rolled on to a 3-1 victory over Omaha.

Their first goal came in the fifth minute when junior center back (defender) Brecken Holbrook booted in a pass from senior midfielder Kendra Smith.

“It was good to get a goal early in the game because it gave us momentum and got us fired up,” Holbrook said in a statement after the win. “Through out the whole game we had a lot of chances on goal and everyone was really getting after it offensively.”

The Wildcats put together a solid offensive performance with 10 of their season-high 25 shots being on goal. Omaha only had four of their eight shots on goal, and scored their lone goal off a penalty kick late in the first half.

Coach Tim Crompton was proud of his squad’s effort, but he continued to look forward, talking about using this victory to help build the team up.

“It was a great team effort with some exceptional finishing on our part,” Crompton said in a statement. “We had some lapses as a group pertaining to Omaha’s counterattack, yet we were better with it in the second half. We still have plenty of work to do on that end.”

After the early goal by Holbrook, the score remained 1-0 until early in the 45th minute when Omaha was awarded a penalty just outside the goal box. That goal was kicked just past the hand of freshman goalkeeper Sydnie Stokes by Omaha junior defender Hannah Wampler.

Right after the kick off to the second half, junior midfielder Chansi Crompton scored a soaring goal from 35 yards out to put the lead back in the Wildcats’ favor.

The teams exchanged shots, with none hitting their target until the 59th minute, when junior forward Stacy Blair sent a low ball into the goal from 30 yards out. This goal proved to be the last of the match, and sealed the victory for the Wildcats.

“The whole team worked really hard and it was good to get our first win under our belt,” Holbrook said in a statement, as she and the other players look to continue in that winning spirit.

The Wildcats improved to 1-1-0 on the season. They will go on the road next weekend, as they play Colorado College on Friday and New Mexico on Sunday.
