If you are anything like me, the smoldering heat this summer has made going outside close to unbearable.
With temperatures rising into the nineties for the past month, I am sure students are beginning to wonder, “When will this heat let up?” According to a temperature forecast, August is planned to bring us temperatures in the mid-eighties.
OK, now that we have stated the obvious fact, it’s hot, the question on the table now is how do we escape the scorching weather?
I couldn’t help but do some research of my own in order to find things to cool me down this summer. Since I was young I have always loved running through sprinklers. I don’t know what it is about feeling the cool grass beneath your feet and letting the water spray you, but it’s my favorite.
As college students we often live either in an apartment or the dorms, where maybe we don’t have direct access to running sprinklers.
Gather a group of friends, pack a picnic and head out to one of the many parks in Ogden. Sprinklers are often on later in the day. If you are trying to pinch pennies, this is a great free alternate option from a water park.
I thought hiking from the bottom of campus to the top in cold weather was the worst. I didn’t realize that hike is 10 times worse during the summer. I’m beginning to regret taking summer classes. By the time I get to the top of campus I am sweating and feel really bad for the poor student that will sit next to me in class.
The other day I was driving down Washington Boulevard with the air conditioner blasting and on the side of the road was a man out for an afternoon run. It was around 3 p.m., one of the hottest parts of the day. I couldn’t help but wonder if he was about ready to pass out.
People, if you are going to go for a run, I highly suggest getting out earlier in the morning or holding off until later in the evening. Please, let’s avoid passing out due to heat stroke. That never ends well, I am sure.
My car seems to collect half my closet and various other items during the semester when I am hardly home. Not only does the inside need to be cleaned but the outside is in desperate need as well. The other day I took the afternoon to clean my car.
This chore can be mundane, but I found that you can have fun with it and cool off with the hose. Get some friends and see if they will help, in the end your car is clean and you just had a great water fight.
You wouldn’t think summer would be the perfect time for a winter sport. Take a day and head to the Ogden Ice Sheet. Open skate hours are from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
The ice sheet is close to campus, located across from the Dee Events Center. With a Weber State University ID, students can skate for $5.25, including skates.
Now, don’t let the heat ruin your summer, find ways to cool down and go enjoy the long summer days and the cool summer nights.
