The Weber State University women’s basketball team has begun its 2012-13 season and looks to secure its first win on Thursday night against Boise State University.
The Wildcats are coming off a recent 80-55 loss against the Brigham Young University Cougars last Friday for their season-opening match.
“I feel like the first half was definitely our better time during the game,” said freshman forward Kalie Matthews. “We started out strong and kept it kind of close during the game, and then we kind of fizzled out toward the end of the first half. In the second half, we came back, and we should have pushed the ball more . . . we definitely dominated on rebounds, but our transition defense just wasn’t there last Friday.”
Prior to the loss against BYU, WSU played two solid exhibition matches. The Wildcats played the first exhibition game of the season against Concordia University, and they came out with a 78-48 win.
“I think the thing that will be great (this season) is our athleticism,” Matthews said. “We’re a young team, but we just know how to push the ball and how to get back in transition. We’re working on it . . . but I think we’re going to shock everybody.”
After their 30-point victory in the first exhibition game against CU, the Wildcats came out and posted a 40-point victory in their second exhibition game against Adams State University. The Wildcats defeated the Colorado-based school with a score of 84-44. WSU forced 33 turnovers during the game and shot 49 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent from behind the arc.
WSU will prepare for its game against BSU on Thursday. WSU lost to BSU last year with a score of 86-68.
Although the Wildcats are returning from last year’s poor season, things are already looking quite hopeful for the new Wildcat team. Matthews said this is the mindset for the team.
“We’re trying to make a statement this year that we’re going to be different than last year and tear things up,” Matthews said. “We’re a whole different team than last year, and we’re bringing in a whole new tempo to the game.”
