Softball gets first win, more losses

After 14 straight losses, the Weber State University softball team registered its first win of the season over spring break against California State University, Northridge.

The Wildcats took part in the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. WSU opened the tournament up with four straight losses against DePaul University; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; CSUN and New Mexico State University.

WSU’s first win of the year came on the final day of the tournament in a rematch against CSUN. The Wildcats had to rally from 1-0 down to claim a 3-1 win. Krystin Kubo went 3-3 from the plate and knocked in the winning run in the seventh inning. Desiree Mejia also had a good game from the plate, going 4-4, including a double.

Junior right-hander Kylee Colvin took the win against the Matadors. She finished the game with five strikeouts and one walk, and allowed five hits.

The Wildcats went on to lose to NMSU in the final game of that tournament. The following weekend, WSU was back in action, this time at the Long Beach State Invitational. The Wildcats struggled in California and were unable to come up with a win, falling to the University of California, Santa Barbara; California State University, Fullerton; and North Dakota State University. They also had a game against Virginia Technical Institute get rained out.

Now WSU will open its regular season. The first game will take place on Wednesday in Ogden against Utah State University.
