Clubs make digital transition to CollegiateLink

CollegiateLink is the home page of Clubs and Organizations for Weber State University students. Wildcats wanting to get involved with clubs or those who want to start up new clubs need to visit the new CollegiateLink website, which can be found under the Clubs and Organizations tab on www.weber.edu or on the student portal.

Neil Burnett, Web and public relations director for Clubs and Organizations, spoke about CollegiateLink at the Clubs and Organizations presidential meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 12. He said CollegiateLink is the basis for club funding this year, and every club will be required to update all its information by Oct. 8.

Burnett said he hopes the website will not only increase the recruitment level of WSU clubs, but also enhance the college experience for all students. Through CollegiateLink, students can post club events, register their clubs, and update their profiles and information.

“It will bridge the gap between incoming students and the social media tools that many clubs already have in place,” Burnett said.

CollegiateLink will bring all of these tools together in one place, making the website an index for all of the clubs at WSU. Students will no longer have to search Facebook or scan bulletin boards for contact information.

“This site will allow students to find the Facebook page of a club they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to find,” Burnett said. “Twitter and other websites can be linked on there as well.”

The website isn’t new to WSU and has been used by clubs for three years, according to Tara Peris, the adviser for Clubs and Organizations. This is the “transition year,” Peris said. Everything has been paper-based, and CollegiateLink wasn’t a requirement for clubs until this academic year.

“We are hoping that, by having this transition to this online social network for clubs, it will be more exposure for them for students,” Paris said. “By having their support behind it and their activity on there, they will hopefully see the benefits of being listed.”

WSU e-mail accounts are required when logging on to CollegiateLink. This will also help serve the other purpose of the website, which is to track service hours that members undertake for the Community Involvement Center. Club members are encouraged to register with the CIC, since logged service hours will help determine extra funding for the clubs.

Mike Moon, assistant director for the CIC, also spoke specifically about using CollegiateLink to register clubs for service and volunteer opportunities. Clubs are encouraged to partner up with the Volunteer Involvement Program, a student-run community service program. VIP is a part of the WSU Student Association and is directly in charge of specific projects around the campus and community.

“Our goal is that students not only graduate with a diploma, but with a resume,” Moon said, “that you are getting practical use for the information that you are getting in the classroom, and you are making a difference with that practical use.”

Moon said he would encourage clubs to utilize VIP students and the program. For those clubs that require service and volunteer hours for membership, CollegiateLink will provide them with access to these opportunities.

CollegiateLink also contains a calendar of events from each club, links to the WSUSA, Student Alumni Association and housing events. The site will provide recommendations of organizations and clubs for students to join based on their preselected interests.
