The Weber State University men’s tennis team started their final weekend of home matches with a dominating win over the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota with a 7–0 win on March 31.
“Today was the first match this year I felt everyone was competing well,” Director of Tennis Brad Ferreira said. “From our doubles to singles, it was a solid outing.”
The Wildcats got off to a quick start with a doubles point from senior Shao-Po Yin and junior Stefan Cooper as they defeated Dustin Britton and Travis Lau 6–2. Freshman Cezary Walkusz and junior Hou-En Chen entered their double match on a four match winning streak and kept the streak alive with a 6–2 win, completing the doubles sweep.
The dominate duo have a record of 10–4 so far this season with more matches to come.
Ferreira felt that Walkusz and Chen played extremely well in both their doubles and also in their own singles matches.
“Our doubles were solid,” Ferreira said. “Jack and Caesar played extremely well.”
Weber State continued their success in singles play, with all six of the men picking up wins. Chen picked up his fourth straight singles match win defeating Ty Misialek of North Dakota 6–3 and 6–1.
Senior Scott Hintze finished the day for the Wildcats winning 7–5 and 6–4 over Matt Hokanson, completing the sweep for WSU over the Fighting Hawks.
In day two, Wildcats played their final home game of the season against Portland State. Because it was the last home game, Hintze and Yin were honored as seniors.
“I’m so proud of how much Shao-Po and Scott have done for the program,” Ferreira told Weber State Athletics of his seniors. “Senior day is always bittersweet for me. They have been huge assets to our tennis family.”
Weber State defeated PSU with a 5–2 victory.
The day started off with Weber State winning all three of the doubles matches. Yin and Cooper, the No. 1 doubles team, were able to dispatch a 6–4 victory over Nathan Boniel and Tommy Edwards.
While Cooper conquered his doubles match, Yin didn’t fair as well in his single match falling 6–2, 6–3 to Boniel.
Hintze was finished his senior day with two wins — his first coming in the doubles match with Kris Van Wyk defeating Scott Goldner and Yousef Abdo 6–4. Hintze finished his day off with a 6–3, 6–2, trouncing Sam Larson in singles play.
The rest of the Wildcats rallied in the other three singles matches and were able to win them all.
With the weekend sweep, the Wildcats are now 4–3 in Big Sky Conference play and 7–8 overall for the season.
Weber State hits the road for five straight away matches to finish the season. They will first play Utah State on April 7, followed by four Big Sky Conference matches.
The Wildcats will then head to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the Big Sky Championship Tournament.
