Softball finishes weekend tournament with three wins
The Weber State University softball team continued its preseason tournament schedule over the weekend, as they came away with three wins and one loss in the first two days of the DeMarini Desert Classic in Henderson, Nevada.
The highlight of the weekend came on Saturday, when sophomore Kirtlyn Bohling threw a five-inning no-hitter against Boise State University in the Wildcats 10-0 win.
Senior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer provided most of the offense for the Wildcats by getting on base a team-high eight times and driving in a team-high eight runs.
Weber State (7-3) will be back on the road this week when they participate in the Texas Invitational tournament in Austin, Texas, from Feb. 26 to Feb. 28.
Men’s basketball remains in first place with win at Northern Arizona
Despite losing senior Joel Bolomboy to an injury in the first half, the Wildcats were able to stay ahead of the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks to pick up the 77-74 win.
Junior Jeremy Senglin led the team with a game-high 22 points, while also pulling down four rebounds and recording three assists. Junior Kyndahl Hill stepped in for the injured Bolomboy and scored 19 points—his second-highest total this season—and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Wildcats (20-7, 12-2 in Big Sky Conference play) remain in first place in the conference standings with the win. The team will return home for its final two games this week, hosting Montana State University (12-14, 7-7) on Thursday and University of Montana (17-8, 12-2) on Saturday.
Women’s tennis gets first win of the season
Despite getting swept in the doubles matches, the WSU women’s tennis team rallied in singles competition to get their first win of the year 4-3 over University of North Dakota.
The Fighting Hawks won all three doubles matches to put them up 1-0 early over the Wildcats. North Dakota continued to pick up wins as junior Faith Lee defeated freshman Sara Parker (7-5, 6-3) in the No. 3 singles match and freshman Preethi Kasilingam defeated sophomore Dominique Beauvais (6-3, 6-3) in the No. 4 match.
The Wildcats picked up quick wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, as sophomore Devi Hasan and freshman Morgan Dickason swept their opponents in two sets each. Seniors Agata Bachanek and Kristi Elmer were the deciding factor for the Wildcats, as they each battled to three-set wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches to give the Wildcats their first victory of the season.
The Wildcats (1-7, 1-0 in Big Sky Conference play) will play next on the road at Eastern Washington University (7-3, 2-0) on Feb. 26, as they continue their seven-game road trip. The team will return home on March 23 to play their final seven games of the season in Ogden.
