Radio from Hell does 10th annual All-Day Show at WSU

X96: Radio from Hell’s Kerry Jackson, Bill Allred and Gina Barberi broadcast their 10th annual All-Day Show in the Shepherd Union Building on Friday, giving away tickets to concerts and sports events, and featuring bands such as Fictionist and Brumby, a band from Provo.

WSU’s radio station, KWCR, teamed up with Radio from Hell, handing out stickers and free Subway sandwiches to help get students involved with the All-Day Show.

Jackson said college radio has affected alternative radio stations, including X96, in many ways.

“College radio stations were some of the most popular stations people were listening to in the late ’80s and early ’90s,” he said. “Radio owners studied these stations and noticed that colleges were paying more attention to their audience and playing songs that people wanted to hear rather than songs that were high on the charts.”

The Radio from Hell hosts discussed why they come to WSU to do the All-Day Show.

“It first started out as kind of a dare at first,” Allred said. “We thought it was kind of fun, so we kept coming back. It’s also good advertisement for Weber State University because it focuses on the campus for 13 hours.”

Jackson, Allred and Barberi finalized their three-year contract with the station’s new owner, Broadway Media, a week ago. Barberi reflected on the many years working alongside Jackson and Allred and joked that they’ll keep working as long as they’re paid.

“No, it’s not just about the money,” Barberi said. “Being a part of the show is not just about one thing. It’s an everyday event that I look forward to every day. Not a lot of people can say that they look forward to going to work.”

To get ready for Salt Lake’s Comic Con, X96 will host the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con FanXperience Red Carpet Party on April 18 at the Hotel Club Elevate. Community members can go meet their favorite Comic Con celebrities and dress up for a chance to win a $500 gift certificate to Timpanogos Harley Davidson in a cosplay party.

Another event X96 will be at is the Real Salt Lake Carnival on May 17. The carnival is a pre-game event at the Rio Tinto Stadium that gives hardcore RSL fans the opportunity to eat and meet with other fans excited for the games. The radio station will be there with games and prizes to pump up RSL fans.

“It’s a really fun event,” said Jordan De La Cruz, promotions director of X96. “It gives us the perfect opportunity to interact with the fans and hang out.”

The summer events will lead up to X96’s annual Big Ass Show on Sept. 27. The festival has featured several popular artists, such as Imagine Dragons, Neon Trees and Panic! at the Disco. X96 will give away free tickets to listeners throughout the beginning of September. More information is available at
