After getting its first win of the season, the Weber State University women’s soccer team started a six-game road trip.

After splitting the first two games of its road trip, WSU will take on the University of Nevada on Friday in Reno, Nev. The Wildcats’ road trip started last week when they traveled south after defeating Utah Valley University.

WSU first headed to Texas, where it took on the University of Texas at El Paso, and lost 3-0 in a match that was shortened by lightning. WSU then racked up another win against New Mexico State University, 4-1.

In the first match of the road trip, the Wildcats fell behind early when UTEP’s Azia Nicholson scored in the 15th minute. Two minutes later, the Miners found the net again. This time Mackenzie German scored off of an assist by Tess Hall, who also assisted the first goal.

Despite a strong offensive showing, WSU was unable to score. Freshman Mackenzie Harrison took five shots in the match, but was unable to find the net. Late in the first half, WSU had two chances to score off-corner kicks, but each attempt was saved.

One minute into the second half, UTEP struck again, scoring its third goal of the match. This time it was Brittany Kinddzierski who scored.

WSU continued to pressure the Miners, finishing the match with 10 shots, but the Wildcats were unable to score.

Head Coach Tim Crompton said he feels WSU is a strong team, but needs to continue improving on some elements of its game.

“I believe we’re a very good team,” Crompton said, “but we still have some work to do.”

Two days later, WSU traveled to New Mexico and faced NMSU. After struggling to score in the game against UTEP, the floodgates opened for the Wildcats against the Aggies. Ryley Hansen got the breakthrough goal for WSU in the seventh minute of the game.

The Aggies tied the game late in the first half, but WSU regained the lead 40 seconds later when Abbey Kennedy scored off an assist by Chansi Crompton. Chansi got her second assist of the match in the 63rd minute when she found Mackenzie Day, who scored to make it 3-1. Harrison also found the net for WSU.

It was the first career goal for each woman who scored for the Wildcats.

In the match against NMSU, the Wildcats recorded a season-high 16 shots. It was the first time WSU scored four goals in one game since 2010.

Chansi said she hopes that, as the season goes on, the team will continue to improve and get stronger.

“We just need to keep improving and keep getting better,” she said.

Following the game against UN this week, WSU will head to California, then Washington and Montana. The Wildcats will stay on the road until the end of September, when they will return home to face Northern Arizona University.

WSU currently has a record of 2-5 and the sixth-best record in the Big Sky Conference. Conference play begins for the Wildcats on Sept. 21, when they will take on Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash.
