I’ve got to get something off my chest. It might not be all that popular. In fact, I know my coworker, Corie Holmes, will hate this column. But, I feel I need to express my feelings.
I can’t stand Brian Wilson.
No, no, no, not the Beach Boy, but the bearded relief pitcher of the San Francisco Giants. I know he’s a hot commodity lately, with his forced over-the-top humor, his awkwardness and his beard, but I can’t stand him. I’ve thought about it for a long time, and I can honestly say the fact that I’m a big Los Angeles Dodgers fan, and he plays for the Giants (LA’s longtime rival) has nothing to do with my hatred of him.
Recently, after he appeared on ESPN’s College Game Day, my Twitter feed was overrun with Tweets about people proclaiming their undying love for the bearded bonehead. Wilson, who graduated from Louisiana State University, appeared on the show in full LSU uniform and helmet and listed why LSU would win.
I had seen multiple Wilson Tweets that were re-Tweeted throughout the week about the LSU-Alabama game, listing ludicrous reasons why LSU would win. I began to wonder if I was the only person to hate him. After all, I’m pretty sure my fellow Signpost columnist would gladly marry him if given the chance.
I typed “I hate Brian Wilson” into Google and was pleased to find that I’m not alone. Others hate him too, but we are a minority. According to a poll on a website, only 29 percent of people don’t like Wilson. I also searched Twitter to see how many fellow Wilson haters I could find. Once again, the results weren’t overwhelming, but it was comforting to know I’m not alone.
The reasons to hate Wilson listed on Twitter and on a few websites I found were similar to mine. There was the fact that his humor seems forced and over-the-top. To me, when I see Wilson on TV dressed up in some crazy costume or talking about the people who live in his beard, I see an attention-starved kid trying to be different to stand out.
Another person who had met him said he was kind of a jerk, which I can believe after seeing his freak out after being taken out of a game in July. Wilson threw a Gatorade container across the dugout, picked up a bat and started hitting things.
For nearly two years, I feel like I’ve been bombarded with people telling me how awesome Wilson is. I held my tongue and didn’t express how I really felt about Wilson.
I know there will be many who disagree with my Wilson-hating views, and I’m okay with that. I hope that those people will soon get tired of Wilson’s antics soon, but I fear that they may continue to feed that bearded, attention monger for the foreseeable future.
So, I’ll just silently die a little on the inside every time I see one of his stupid commercials or listen to one of his over-the-top interviews or hear him refer to the (hopefully) mythical people who live in his beard.
