Weber State University offers a wide range of over 225 majors that students can choose from to help them earn the career of their dreams. On Feb. 10, students were able to see just how much Weber State can offer and discover new areas of academic interest at the annual Major Fest.
Major Fest was held in the ballrooms of the Shepherd Union where crowds were busily moving from one booth to the next learning about different majors and minors, hoping to find one that interested them.
Many who attended Major Fest were high school students exploring the opportunities that higher education had to offer.
“I wanted to get an idea of what college is like, and I wanted to get an idea of what majors are unique to Weber State,” said high school senior Jason Godfrey.
Although many in attendance were high school students, there were also a number of WSU students who were searching the booths as well.
“My professor told me about it, and I wanted to find things that interest me, and it was a good suggestion because, so far, I’ve got some great ideas for a major,” Bryan Saunders, a WSU freshman, said.
Macey Bucker, the Health Administration Services Program director, said he believes that a person’s major and minor can be a big decision and that some people may not understand quite how significant the decision can be in determining the direction of a person’s future education and life.
“A major allows you to explore and identify what passions you have,” Bucker said. “More than anything, it opens doors of opportunity.”
Bucker also said that majors are able to create these opportunities because they give students specific knowledge and abilities that allow them to enter into a career that’s meaningful to them.
Due to the fact that a major can be so influential to a person’s future, some students can become nervous and worried about how to make the decision.
“I think you have to find what you like first,” Bucker said. “The essence of that is getting exposed to as many different areas as possible, and you should make sure your career path will support the lifestyle you want.”
