Wooden brooms, a Quaffle, Bludgers, three side-by-side hoops on each end of the playing field, a Golden Snitch and Muggles. All were key items needed for Weber State Univeristy’s first Muggle Quidditch game.
The Davis Campus WSUSA’s Activities Board put together this event in hopes to bring out students to a stress-free environment outside of school where they can get to know each other and have fun.
The event took place at Layton Commons Park on Saturday morning. From 8:30 to 9 a.m., there was a Quidditch training offered by the Activities Board for those who weren’t familiar with how to play the game. The Quidditch games began from 9-11 a.m.
Seth Daimler, a WSUSA Activities Board member, came up with the idea for the event. “It’s never been done on Weber State Campus before,” said Daimler. “I thought it would be fun to start something new and maybe eventually, if the turnout continues to go well, turn it into a club and organization on campus.”
Before the games started, players participated in the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Bean challenge from “Harry Potter” as an icebreaker. “There’s two identical colors, one is a good flavor and the other is a bad flavor,” said Seth, “for example if you pick a green one it could be green apple or booger flavored. If you choose an orange one it could be peach or it could be vomit. Or black is black licorice or black pepper.”
Everyone who came out to the event took home a box of Bertie Bott’s jellybeans with them.
Games were played with five-against-five or six-against-six on a team. A volleyball was used as the Quaffle and dodgeballs were used as Bludgers. One of the players dressed up in yellow to play the part of the Golden Snitch. The Golden Snitch would run out during the last five minutes of the game and whoever caught it would ultimately win.
“For the first time that we put on this event, we’re really happy with how it turned out,” said Natalie Barcelo, WSUSA Davis Campus Vice President. “It was extremely fun for those who came.”
“I think I heard more laughing out there than panting,” said Daimler.
The Davis Campus Activities Board plans to do this event again within the next year. For anyone who is interested and missed it this time around, plan on seeing Muggle Quidditch again.
“I just want people to know how much fun it really was,” said Daimler. “I hope that they can see that through some of the photos that will be posted that way we can get word spread around and it can continue to grow each year.”
The Davis Campus’s next event is Fun Fall Break Night at Classic Fun Center in Layton. Students get in free along with three guests when they show their Wildcard. Everyone is encouraged to dress up as a superhero or villain for the costume contest that will be held.
