The Weber State volleyball team finished its tournament schedule this weekend at the Lone Star Invitational, dropping two of their three matches.

The Wildcats opened up the tournament with a four-set victory against Air Force (14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21). The Wildcats outhit the Falcons 55-42 as outside hitter Amanda Varley ended the match with 11 kills, while outside hitter Ciera Borho helped the cause with an additional nine kills and two blocks.

After missing some time due to injury, senior Audrey Biggs returned in a big way, leading the team with a game-high 19 kills.

Next up for the Wildcats on Friday night was Texas Tech. Biggs once again led the way with 22 kills but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats fell to the Red Raiders (25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 13-15).

“Today showed that we have learned to play better for a long period of time,” WSU head coach Tom Peterson said. “We just need to continue to be that same team in those critical moments. It was a neat match to beat Air Force as we got them out of their system. Beating Texas Tech would have been neat as well but we just didn’t capitalize on our chances.”

The Wildcats took on Abilene Christian in their final match of the tournament. It was the first meeting between the two schools as ACU stepped off the court with a three-set win (25-22, 29-27, 27-25).

The loss made the Wildcats fall to 3-10, and 1-2 at the Lone Star Showdown.

Senior outside hitter Audrey Biggs was held to a season-low 12 kills as senior McKay Tarbox had a team-high 11 digs in the loss.

“As a whole group, we just didn’t do what we need to do to prepare mentally,” Peterson said. “We weren’t mentally ready to play any team. After an emotional match last night, we just didn’t prepare for this match. We can do a lot of great things but also dumb things as well. We just have to be that team that does great things all the time.”

The Wildcats will open their Big Sky conference campaign as they take on the University of Montana on Thursday night at home.
