Near the beginning of the night, the dance floor was already full of Wildcats outfitted in neon and teased hair. The ’80s neon-themed dance party was the first of the spring semester and is an annual tradition. But this year, in concurrence with the party theme, the dance was held in the main dining area of the Shepherd Union Building on Friday night. Dances are usually held in the ballrooms or the atrium. The dance took three months’ worth of planning and preparation and was deemed a success by Thomas Judd, the activities director of the programming branch of the Weber State University Student Association. In addition to the programming branch, the vice presidents helped with advertising.

“We’ve never had a party in the dining area before,” Judd said. “So we really wanted to try something different this year and create that party atmosphere.”

While most students came to the school already dressed up, many decorated custom T-shirts and sweatbands at a table provided by WSUSA. The first 600 students through the door had the opportunity to design their own neon shirts. There were stencils and fabric markers as well as paint for students to use to create their own neon accessories for the dance.

The music was provided by live DJs and featured a mixture of ’80s and and modern dance hits.

Some students raided their parents’ closets for clothes to wear to the party. Monica Connors, an undecided freshman, said she and her friends borrowed clothes from her friend’s mother. This was Connors’ first time attending a party at WSU.

“We just took a bunch of my friend’s mom’s old clothes and just went through them and put on her mom’s old clothes,” Connors said.

Connors said she will definitely come to more dance parties in the future and that it was a lot of fun.

“I just love to dance,” she said.
