Weber State University’s cross-country teams went in different directions this week.

The WSU women’s cross-country team traveled south to Provo to win its second match in as many meets this season, beating Brigham Young University 17-52.

WSU cross-country coach Paul Pilkington sent the women’s team to BYU to compete on Friday while the men’s team headed north to Bozeman, Mont., for the Montana State Invitational.

The Wildcat women’s team is currently ranked 17th in the NCAA Division I schools and first in the Mountain Region. The Wildcats dominated the tournament, with Amber Henry and Sarah Callister crossing the line together.

Pilkington said he was happy with the team’s performance and enjoyed the opportunity to win a tournament at BYU.

“The women were fantastic,” he said. “It was nice to beat BYU in their own event.”

Henry, a junior at WSU, finished with a time of 16:58:9, followed by senior Callister, whose time was 16:59:2. Taylor Thornley, also a senior, finished third with a time of 17:16:1.

The women Wildcats finished a dominating 1-2-3-5-6-7, scoring a near-perfect 17 in the race. Their closest opponent was BYU with 52 points.

John Coyle led the WSU men across the finish line in Bozeman to a first-place win. Coyle’s winning time of 24:43 was followed by teammate Trevor Ricks’ third-place finish of 25:53. Mike Hardy finished fifth with a time of 24:59.

“We ran a good, solid race,” Pilkington said.

The men’s team finished 1-3-5-10 in the Montana State Invitational. The Wildcats narrowly beat out the University of Wyoming for the win, 48-49, with Montana State University scoring 50 to take third place.

WSU’s cross-country teams will travel to Minnesota on Sept. 29 for their next competition.
