Weber State University men’s tennis team pulled off a 6-1 upset over regional rival Seattle University Friday at the Ogden Athletic Club’s indoor tennis courts. After winning this match, the ‘Cats improve to a 3-5 record this season, and the Redhawks leave with a 3-10 record for the season.

After having a few losses this past season, the team was able to pull off two wins in a row.

“Our team winning this match definitely helps our morale,” said Ben Rode. “We now have a lot of momentum, and our confidence as individuals and as a team is building.”

Rode said that he thinks the team has the momentum to get through some difficult matches that are to come.

“This win was really big,” Rode said. “All of our hard work and tough matches we have played in the past are now starting to show in our current matches.”

The Wildcat’s swept the doubles matches. The No.1 doubles pair Simon Unger and Oliver Good defeated the Seattle double pair Mark Shkrebtan and Simon Meske, 8-2.

“We have been practicing hard, and to get a win and start seeing progress is a good feeling,” Good said. “We deserved this win after the progress we have made this week.”

Unger said that he knew the hard work he put in had paid off.

“I have really worked hard on my serve,” Unger said. “We had been having some problems holding our service game.”

Both Unger and Good said that it was nice to start to see their hard work as a team and as partners start paying off.

Peter Ramstomer and Caio Poitena, the No. 2 pair, ended up winning their match with a score of 8-3. Brothers Dave and Scott Hintze also won their match by an 8-2 score.

“Our match went really well; we played smart and confident,” Dave Hintz said. “Other teams look at Weber State, and they know that it is never going to be just an easy match. We never just give matches away, and other teams know that about us.”

The ‘Cats almost had a clean sweep in the singles matches as well. They came out with only one loss in the No. 4 spot with Jason Bediones from Seattle stealing the win from Dave Hintz.

“One thing that this team has taught me is to never give up when you’re losing,” Dave Hintz said. “Fight and keep fighting. That is what brings success,”

Unger (No.1), Good (No.2), Poitena (No.3) and Ryan Garner (No.5) all won their matches to add to the team’s success.

After the team’s winning streak, it plans to continue it in its next match against Northern Colorado at WSU.

“Winning at home is important and exciting,” Dave Hintz said. “We hope to win all of our games at home.”
