Wildcat soccer wins home opener against Grand Canyon
On Friday, Aug. 26, Wildcat soccer made its homecoming debut as the team took down Grand Canyon, 2-0, on the Wildcat Soccer Field.
Freshman midfielder Megan Price scored the first goal for the Wildcats in the 55th minute, marking the second straight season that a freshman has scored the first goal of the season at home.
Sophomore midfielder Celeste Wheelwright was accredited with the assist.
Junior midfielder Kelsi Tatton added another point to the board in the 86th minute after nailing a rainbow kick from approximately 30 yards out following a nice pass from sophomore forward Morgan Quarnberg.
“It was a real team effort,” Tatton said in a post-game interview with Weber State Athletics. “We got two really good goals, and I am very proud of our team.”
Junior goalkeeper Sydnie Brough shut out Grand Canyon, saving two potential goals.
Weber State soccer recorded its 1,500th overall point.
The team improved to 1-1-0 overall, winning their fourth straight match at home.
The Wildcats will be back in action with back-to-back home games on Friday, Sept. 2, as they take on New Mexico at 3:30 p.m., and on Friday, Sept. 9, against New Mexico State on the Wildcat Soccer Field.
Weber State volleyball goes undefeated in opening tournament
The Weber State women’s volleyball team went undefeated in the Houston Baptist Tournament after beating Houston Baptist 3-0 on Friday, Aug. 26, following another pair of wins against Houston, 4-1, and Louisiana, 4-1, on Saturday, Aug. 27.
“What a wonderful day,” head coach Jeremiah Larsen told Weber State Athletics in a post-game press interview, “not because we won, but because we competed at a high level against quality opponents.”
The Wildcat volleyball team will be back in action at the Titan Classic in Fullerton, California, beginning on Friday, Sept. 9.
“For [the team] to be able to do as well as they did is a testament to all of the hard work our kids have put in since January,” Larsen said. “I am so happy for these women … but there is still a lot of work to do, and we need to continually get better every day.”
Following the tournament in California, the team will head to Illinois to compete in the Western Illinois Hampton Inn Invite on Friday, Sept. 16, before their home Big Sky Conference season opener against Sacramento State on Friday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
Wildcat football begins Thursday at Utah State
Weber State will kick off its 55th season as they take on the Utah State Aggies on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. at Maverick Stadium in Logan, Utah.
In the 2015-16, the Wildcats concluded the season with a 6-5 overall record, and a 5-3 Big Sky Conference record. This was Weber State’s first winning season since 2010.
This will be the 15th match-up between Utah State and Weber, with the Aggies holding a 13-1 series record. Utah State is 8-1 against WSU in Logan. The last meeting between the two teams took place in September, 2013, when USU came out on top, 70-6.
WSU was voted sixth in the Big Sky Conference preseason media and coaches pulls in early August. The Wildcats were also picked 23rd in the nation in The Sporting News preseason poll.

The following week, the team will travel to South Dakota to take on the University of South Dakota on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Wildcats will make their home debut on Saturday, Sept. 17, as they host Sacramento State at the Stewart Stadium at 6 p.m.
