WSU women’s basketball guard Kailie Quinn is this week’s Signpost Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the team with 18 points in the Wildcats’ exhibition win over Adams State.
“It just felt right. I knew I came into the game as a shooter, so I’m here to shoot,” Quinn said. “So I came out and when I was open, I took the shot.”
Quinn comes into this season as a true freshman after averaging 20.7 points, 13.3 rebounds, 5.6 steals and 4.5 assists in her senior year at Judge Memorial Catholic High School. In her debut appearance with the Wildcats, Quinn had a team-high 18 points, while pulling down four rebounds and recording two assists. She also tied for a game high with four steals against the Grizzlies.
“(Quinn) did a terrific job off the bench,” said WSU head coach Bethann Ord. “Coming in and really showing a spark, not only in points but obviously getting the four steals and some of her assists and the hustle plays.”
Even though Quinn has advanced to the next level of competition, she isn’t letting the pressure get to her.
“I come into every game thinking it’s the same game. Same rim, same ball. People put on the same shoes as me, the same jersey as me, and I just come out and play,” Quinn said. “Yeah this is Division I and there is going to be better competition, but you gotta think of it as just another game.”
Quinn and the Wildcats begin their season at home on Friday night, when Weber State hosts Montana-Western at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center. As she prepares to play her first regular-season collegiate game, Quinn feels confident in the team and has a good feeling about their season.
“Our team is working really, really hard,” Quinn said. “We definitely have to come a lot more together, but we’re on the right track right now to have a winning season, and that’s what we’re looking forward to.”
