After a 3-0 blowout victory against North Dakota the week before, the Weber State soccer team took to the road, facing woes and misery as they dropped two games during a conference road trip.
The trip began on Friday as the team took on Sacramento State. The Wildcats, who have faced continued injury woes, came out with a change of strategy and a new lineup.
For the first half of the game, the Wildcat game strategy was working, keeping the score at 0-0. The Wildcats continued the pressure well into the second half.
After 64 minutes of play, the Hornets drew first blood when Maggie Pleis scored off of a well-placed corner kick to put the Hornets up 1-0.
During the 78th minute, the Wildcats attempted to make a cross around midfield, when the cross was intercepted by Shelby Salvacion of the Hornets. Salvacion utilized that interception to make a break away for the Wildcat goal, where she made a 15-yard shot on target to put the Hornets up 2-0, and seal the game score and the loss for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats continued their road journey to Hillsboro, Oregon for a rematch of last year’s Big Sky championship game against the Portland State Vikings.
The Wildcats put forth one of their best performances statistically on the field Sunday afternoon against the Vikings, out-shooting them 14-7 and having two near-miss shots on goal. One came in the 68th minute when a shot from Mackenzie Harrison dinged off of the crossbar of Portland State, and another opportunity in the 83rd minute when Portland State’s goalie Caitlin Plese saved a penalty kick from Stacy Bair.
The lone goal that Portland State needed to win the game came in the third minute of play, when Cori Bianchi set in play a short corner kick to Kayla Hennigsen, who was able to convert that into the net to give Portland State a 1-0 lead, a score which remained though the entire game.
The Wildcats are now 4-11-0 on the season (1-5-0 Big Sky) and will now move on to face Idaho in Moscow this Friday to wrap up traveling in conference. Weber State’s last three games of the season will all be at home starting on Oct. 24, when the Wildcats will face Northern Arizona at 3 p.m. Admittance is free for all members of the community as well as the entire student body.
