Dear Signpost Editor:
On January 31, 2014, I attended the Chinese New Year’s Celebration held in the Student Union Building. I commend Melissa Pittman, the faculty advisor of the Chinese Language and Culture Club, for an excellent job in organizing this monumental celebration. As former Utah Director of Asian Affairs, I have had to organize similar events and understand the meticulous details it takes to successfully involve local schools, school distracts, community, caterers, and performers in such an ambitious program. Melissa was wise to actively solicit parent and children participation, making this event family-friendly and educational. Interests of all ages were thoughtfully accommodated. The enthusiastic crowd, over 1,200 people, were well-entertained with bilingual masters of ceremony, booths of authentic Chinese culture, diverse foods of China, amazing lion and dragon dances, singing, and imperial displays of fashion.
I compliment the sponsors for their support and encourage patrons to show their appreciation to these vendors. The positive public relations from this free event highlight the efforts of WSU to engage divers factions of our community in providing cultural experiences that delight our imagination.
