On Nov. 10, Weber State University announced that they are parting ways with football Head Coach Mickey Mental, effective immediately.
“We want to thank Coach Mental for his efforts and the passion he put into our football program,” Weber State Athletic Director Tim Crompton said. “We wish nothing but the best for him and his family in the future.”
The Wildcats also announced that Associate Head Coach Brent Myers will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Mental was the head coach of the Wildcats for three seasons, where he compiled an overall record of 13 wins to 20 losses and a Big Sky record of eight wins to 14 losses, both of which put him at eighth best out of the 11 coaches the program has had.
Mental was hired in December 2022, after longtime Head Coach Jay Hill was hired as the new defensive coordinator at Brigham Young University.
His firing comes just two days after the Wildcats were beaten 66–14 by the Montana State University Bobcats, which put the Wildcats at 3-wins, 7-losses on the year, and 1-win, 5-losses in Big Sky Conference play.
The Wildcats will not only have to search for a new head coach, but also a new offensive coordinator, as Mental had served in that role since 2022.
This marks the first time in program history that a head coach was fired during the season.
The Wildcats’ first game with Myers as interim head coach comes on Nov. 15, against rival Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.
