After battling for 110 minutes, the Weber State women’s soccer team ended their game against the New Mexico Lobos in a 0-0 draw on the Wildcat Soccer Field on Sept. 2.

“We came out and played hard,” junior goalkeeper Sydnie Brough said. “We wish that we could have put it away, but it is what it is.”

Brough had a total of seven saves — five in the first half, two in the second and zero in either overtime round.

Brough now has a streak of 210:37 scoreless minutes.

“I like to be able to help my team out and get us closer to winning,” Brough said. “I like to be able to pump the team up and give them motivation to go. It is good to be able to perform for my team and have them count on me.”

New Mexico took a total of 22 shots, while Weber State only shot 8.

Freshman forward Gwen Maly had a total of six shots for the Lobos, with only one of those being on target. Junior forward Elieen Zendejas had five shots for New Mexico.

Freshman central defenders Nicolle Allen and Gabrielle Vivier-Hannay of Weber State can be given credit for assisting Brough in the shutout game, after both team members played 110 minutes in front of Brough.

“I think we are doing very well defensively,” Brough said. “We saw a lot in the back today and we handled it … we are talking and we are getting better at each game.”

Sophomore midfielder Madison Garlock played 75 minutes and took a total of six shots, with two of those being on target.

After a miscommunication between the New Mexico goalie, Tayler Hammack, and the ball, Garlock found herself in front of the net with an open shot.

A New Mexico defender stepped in and blocked the shot taken by Garlock in the 87th minute of the game.

Vivier-Hannay took two shots throughout the game, with one of them being at 20:13 and was saved by the Lobos goalie.

Sophomore midfielder Celeste Wheelwright took a shot at 31:27 that was also blocked.

Heading into next week, Brough said that the team’s focus is going to be, “finding more offensive opportunities and better communication.”

Weber State improved to 1-1-1 overall and will play two matches at home next week, beginning with New Mexico State on Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m., and Air Force on Sept. 11, at 12 p.m.

Conference play will begin on Sept. 23, as the ‘Cats take on Northern Colorado at home.

“I feel like we are doing well as a young team,” Brough said. “I feel like we are going to continue to progress throughout the whole season.”
