The Weber State Hiking and Outdoors Club kicked off their third hike of the semester at Antelope Island. Hikers enjoyed a walk up to Antelope Island’s highest point, Frary Peak, over spring break.
This 3.25 mile hike up to the top of the mountain provided outstanding views of the Great Salt Lake, Wasatch Mountains and the numerous bison in the area. The hike to the summit took around 2 1/2 hours and proved to be rewarding with the remarkable 360 degree view of the entire island from down below.
This strenuous hike featured periods of rocky terrain and areas of no shade, resulting in hikers taking intermittent water breaks. The last mile of the hike is virtually all uphill, with hikers gaining 2050 ft in elevation. The steep climb was tricky. The marked trail became smaller and took various twists and turns until the final climb across a rock to the top of the mountain.
The Hiking and Outdoors club is a unique group that takes regular hikes every other Saturday. It’s a great club to join to get outside and explore all Ogden has to offer. If you, or anyone you know is interested in joining, check out their website on Weber Sync or check out their Facebook page.
