After winning their first match against University of California, Riverside on Friday, the Weber State men’s tennis team dropped the final two matches of their three match series in Las Vegas over the weekend.

The Wildcats kicked off their weekend trip with a milestone 6-1 win over U.C. Riverside. After starting off strong in doubles play to get the win in the best-of-three competition, the Wildcats swept the Highlanders in the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles matches. After losing his first set 6-1 to Highlanders’ freshman Marcus Vizcarra, WSU junior Sanjay Goswami rallied back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 to grab the win in the No. 5 singles match. The only hiccup for the Wildcats came in the No. 1 singles match when junior Jakub Gewert lost two close sets 7-6, 6-4 against Julian Ruffin.

The win against U.C. Riverside was the 100th win for the men’s tennis team since 2004, when the Big Sky Conference began recording season win-loss records.

“We have been working on doubles, and it showed today as we got a great start to the match,” WSU head coach Brad Ferreira said after the match. “All in all, a very solid performance from everyone.”

Victory was short-lived for the Wildcats as they won only a single point each in their matches against University of Nevada, Las Vegas and New Mexico State University. The Wildcats’ lone point against the UNLV Rebels came in the No. 3 singles match when Stefan Cooper came away with the win in three sets. Although Shao-Po Yin and Landon Barlow combined to win the No. 3 doubles match, it wasn’t enough for the Wildcats as the Rebels took the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches to win doubles competition.

New Mexico State came away with a 4-1 win over the Wildcats. Two singles matches went unfinished, due to the Aggies quickly winning their four matches in the best-of-seven-match event. After winning the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches both by the score of 6-4, New Mexico State won the No. 1, 2 and 5 singles matches in three sets each to give the Aggies the overall win. Hou-En Chen was the only Wildcat to get a win against New Mexico State, sweeping junior Paul Denele in two sets in the No. 6 singles match.

“All the matches were extremely close,” Ferreira said. “We played New Mexico State last year, and I saw a huge improvement in our guys this year.”

The Wildcats (4-6) will continue their road trip later this month as they play at University of Utah on Feb. 21 and at Sacramento State on Feb. 27. Their next home game will be on March 6 when they host Santa Clara University.
