Capturing the world in one fell swoop, the girl-on-fire Katniss Everdeen will take the screen once again for the third installment of “The Hunger Games,” “Mockingjay – Part 1.”
Starting as a mere tribute for the Games, Katniss will now don the black wings of District 13’s mockingjay and take on the Capitol with her trusty trio Peeta, Gale and Haymitch.

- Costumes and makeup galore: Getting gussied up for the big screen takes a lot of work. According to most of the cast of “The Hunger Games,” the makeup and costumes were quite intense. With over 1,800 costumes to make Capitol couture for their elaborate set, actress Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket) said the long nails were the worst part about her costume, while Stanley Tucci had to get false teeth to portray his character Cesar Flickerman.

- Changes to fit the role: Along with an army of makeup artists, actors also had to make physical changes to their bodies. Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, both natural blondes, had to dye their hair brunette while Josh Hutcherson, a natural brunette, had to dye his hair blonde. Alexander Ludwig, who played Cato, had to gain 40 pounds, while Liam Hemsworth had to lose weight to look like he was starving.

- The shaky-camera effect: How do you capture all the action from a first-person point of view? Well, director Gary Ross knew just the bold tactics to put the audience right in Katniss’s shoes. Using an old cinematic style of filming, Ross decided to use up-close shots and shaky camera angles to reflect the urgency of the situation and to show us the full “Hunger Games” experience straight through Katniss’ eyes.

- The origin of “Katniss”: The name “Katniss” has slowly become synonymous with “girl-on-fire” or “mockingjay,” but where does Katniss’ name really take root? According to Suzanne Collins, author of “The Hunger Games” series, almost everything in her book symbolizes a deeper theme. As for her main character’s name, “Katniss” is a broadleaf plant in the shape of an arrowhead. I’m guessing this means archery is her thing, right?
