At the front of The Depot in Salt Lake City, only a metal gate separated fans from the band. Screaming and jumping up and down, we were all unified.
Attending the American Authors and Echosmith concert Monday night sent chills down my spine, since I have been a fan of both bands for quite some time now.
Echosmith, an indie pop band from Los Angeles, was the first band to walk onto stage. I fell in love with this band the second I discovered them on Pandora.
Echosmith is a band of three brothers and their sister Sydney. Sydney, 17, Noah, 18, Jamie, 21 and Graham, 15, started playing instruments at a very early age.
If you are still not able to put faces to names, you may know this band for one of their top songs, “Cool Kids.”
The crowd moved as one as we belted each word from every song. Standing next to us were parents and their maybe 4-year-old daughter, who seemed slightly on the grumpy side about the loud noises going on around her.
Colored lights danced on our faces and hands as we swayed and jumped to the familiar songs that we have sung in the car countless times.
The lights dimmed and one by one the American Authors walked onto the stage. Screaming fans pushed forward and we were now much closer to anybody in front of us. Phones were thrust high into the air as everyone was trying to get a glimpse of the band on their phone.
American Authors is an American rock band that got their start in New York City. Some of their well-known songs are: “Best Day of My Life” and “Believer.”
Midconcert, lead singer Zac Barnett reached out from the stage and waved his hand out into the crowed. Gripping the metal bar with one hand, I reached out to him with the other. In an instant he clutched onto my hand. I couldn’t believe it, and I never wanted to let go.
By time the concert ended I felt as if I was on cloud nine. Barnett had announced that he and his band members would be out to take pictures and chat with the crowd.
As my friends and I made our way to the front of the line, my excitement continued to escalate. My two favorite bands stood there posing for pictures. I couldn’t believe I was in the same vicinity as them.
We made our way to take a picture with American Authors, who smiled at each thrilled fan. As we approached, Barnett reached out to wrap his arms around both my best friend and me. After the picture was snapped, Barnett told us how awesome we were and that he was thankful we came out tonight.
Finally the last line of the night. We now stood waiting to have our picture taken with Echosmith. Their management team talked to us as we waited, and the butterflies in our stomachs doubled.
Our turn at last, I asked if all the band members would sign my phone, which they did. Before the picture was snapped Sydney looked at us and asked us if we could scream with our mouths shut. It was indeed an odd question, but she’s a rock star; she can ask as many weird questions as she wants.
The picture was snapped and they too thanked us for coming out to see their show tonight. The night was pure bliss.
