Men’s basketball assistant coach hired as high school head coach
The Weber State athletics department announced on Thursday that men’s basketball assistant coach Kellen McCoy was hired by Mount St. Mary’s High School in Oklahoma City, Okla, to take over as head coach of their men’s basketball program.
McCoy leaves Weber State after one year as assistant coach. According to the press release, McCoy helped the team in many aspects, including recruiting, player development, and scouting.
As a player at Weber State from 2007 to 2009, McCoy averaged 11.5 points and 2.3 assists per game in 61 career games. As a senior during the 2008-09 season, McCoy helped lead the Wildcats to the team’s second Big Sky Conference regular season title in three seasons before being named conference MVP.
Former Wildcats linebacker invited to NFL rookie camp
Wildcats 2013 Team Defensive MVP Anthony Morales was invited by the Carolina Panthers on Thursday to the team’s rookie camp over the weekend.
Morales averaged 10 tackles per game in 2013, third most in the Big Sky Conference. He finished his four year career at Weber State with 342 total tackles. He ranks 11th in Weber State history for career unassisted tackles (132), third in career assisted tackles (210), and fifth in career total tackles (342). Morales is the third player in Wildcats history with 200 or more career assisted tackles, the first since Joe DiPoalo (234 assisted tackles from 1982-83).
As of Monday, Morales has not been signed by the Panthers.
Softball stand out earns Second Team All-Region honors
Senior pitcher Jasmine Ioane was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Monday, as she was named to the NFCA Midwest All-Region second team.
Ioane compiled a 6-7 record last season, while posting a 3.71 ERA. On offense, Ioane batted .294 for the Wildcats, leading the team in home runs (8), runs (21), and runs batted in (36).
Weber State bass fishing team shows promise in regional competition
Weber State’s bass fishing team put together a good showing at the 2014 Carhartt Western Bassmaster Regional last week, with both of the team’s pairs bagging at least 10 pounds.
David Tonks and Jordan Porritt bounced back from a rough first day that saw them bag only one fish, and caught three fish totaling nine pounds, 13 ounces on Day 2. Their total weight of 11 pounds, nine ounces over the two day event saw them finish in 30th place.
Kory Tams and Schafer Summers put together the big performance for the Wildcats during the event, as they finished with a total weight of 20 pounds, eight ounces. Day 1 saw the duo pull in a total catch of 14 pounds, six ounces, good enough for 20th place at the end of the first day.
