Conference play continued for the Weber State University women’s soccer team this past Saturday with another shutout win, this time over the Eastern Washington University Eagles with a score of 3-0.

Sophomore Mackenzie Harrison scored for the fifth time in the last four games and still leads the team in goals scored. She was accompanied by two headers from Ryley Hansen and Mackenzie “Tiger” Day.

WSU dominated possession in the first half, giving itself more opportunities with four shots on goal, while EWU had just one. The Wildcats frustrated the Eagles, winning many possessions off of EWU goal kicks, something WSU has been looking to improve on.

“We usually are kind of iffy on winning the balls in the air, so we’ve definitely gotten better at that,” Hansen said. “This year we’ve stepped up a lot of things.”

Hansen was the first to take aim and hit the Eagles in the 36th minute, as she connected with the ball with her head off of a beautiful right-to-left cross from senior Bailey Eames. The goal was the only one scored in the first half, but the Wildcats turned up the heat even more with 12 shots in the second half alone, totaling 21 shots. EWU finished with 13.

Harrison doubled up the margin later in the 59th minute of play as she turned and shot the ball at the top of the box, taking one bounce before heading into the back of the net. She’s now one step closer to her goal of breaking a school record.

“Michelle Hoover holds the record for the most goals (in a season), and I want to beat that,” Harrison said. “I want to get to 11, but I really want to get 12.” With seven games left in the regular season and the high potential of postseason play, Harrison is on track to do just that. “I don’t know how realistic it will be, but it could happen.”

To seal the deal for the Wildcats in the 80th minute, Day perfectly headed the ball off of a cross from Chansi Crompton just over the reach of EWU keeper Clara Elsholz to make the score 3-0.

“What we’ve really been working on is getting people into the box,” Day said. “We’ve been working on corner kicks. We always work on heading it in and crossing it.”

Coach Tim Crompton also said he was happy with the win.

“I thought the girls played well today,” he said. “. . . They’re fun to watch, they’re entertaining, they can play in tight spaces. They’re a good team.”

The win was the third-straight shutout victory and the fourth on the season, and the team improved to 6-2-2 overall and 2-0 in conference. The Wildcats handed the Eagles their second-straight shutout loss, putting them at 0-2 in conference play.

The Wildcats will now gear up for a tough road trip as they travel to Cedar City to take on the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University on Friday, then to Flagstaff, Ariz., to battle the currently third-place Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University on Oct. 6. Before coming back home, they will wrap up the road trip with a game against the second-place Bengals of Idaho State University.

WSU’s next home game will be Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.
