After losing its first four matches, the Weber State University women’s soccer team got its first win of the season on Wednesday against Utah Valley University at the Wildcat soccer field.

The Wildcats knocked off the Wolverines 1-0 in the last game of a three-match home stand.

WSU scored the only goal of the match, thanks to freshman Stacy Blair. Blair was playing in her first game after missing the first three matches with an injury. In the 31st minute, she found the back of the net off of a cross from Mackenzie Harrison to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.

Blair said, after being injured and missing the start of the season, it felt good to get the first goal of the year.

“It felt good to get a goal,” Blair said. “We hadn’t scored yet, so it was good to score one. I got hurt in our first game, so it felt good to get back on the field. I just wanted to go out and play and try to help my team.”

For much of the match, the Wildcats were in control. Moving the ball down the field into UVU’s defensive third of the field, WSU finished the match with a season-high 15 shots, with five on target. The Wolverines took 13 shots during the match.

Chanci Crompton said, after losing their first three games, it was good to get a win at home.

“It was good to finally get a win; we’ve been close, but finally getting a goal and a win will give us some confidence,” Crompton said. “We just need to keep improving and keep getting better.”

The Wildcats got a hot start early in the match and racked up the first five shots of the game in the opening seven minutes.

Blair, who came on as a substitute in the 17th minute, ended the Wildcats’ goalless drought in the 31st minute, when she found the back of the net from six yards out after Harrison worked the ball into the box from the left side of the pitch.

As the Wolverines’ defenders surrounded Harrison, the freshman crossed the ball across the goal to Blair, who put it in the net.

UVU created a handful of solid strike attempts throughout the game by focusing on counterattacks, but WSU goalkeeper Ryann Waldman made some key saves to preserve the Wildcats’ first shutout of the season.

WSU Head Coach Tim Crompton said he was happy to see the Wildcats’ first goal of the season.

“It was nice to finally get the lid off and get a goal, but we didn’t really blow it off,” he said. “It’s not like we scored a bunch of goals. I believe we’re a very good team, but we still have some work to do.”

WSU will now embark on a road trip as it travels to El Paso, Texas, to meet the University of Texas, El Paso Miners on Friday night. Then WSU will face New Mexico State University on Sunday to wrap up a three-match, five-day stretch.
