Speaking up and standing out
There was a Pan-Asian and Pasifika cultural performance and celebration held on April 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Safe@Weber will be holding a Take Back the Night on April 10 starting at 6 p.m., giving a place for survivors to share their stories and will feature a keynote speaker. KWCR Wildcat Radio will be hosting “KWCR Fest” on April 9 from 4-8 p.m. involving four bands playing the Wildcat Lanes and Games. Weber State University Student Association Senators also warned that housing is filling up quickly.
Policies and Procedures Manual voting
A vote will be held during the senate meeting on April 13 to sustain changes to the Policies and Procedures Manual. These changes would have the definition of hazing altered to align with federal law as well as changing the definition of students to better reflect those engaging with Weber State University’s classes and programs.
Rackets and bats
The softball team will have a game against the University of Utah, and the baseball team will play two games on April 11 at Ogden High as the last home series of the season. Men’s and women’s tennis will both have games and there will be a soccer game against Utah State University.
Money, money, money
A total of $2,718 was remaining for the budget at the beginning of the meeting. A request was made for $650 for a Hispanic Area Council retreat. While the request was initially tabled, the senate voted to give all remaining funds to the request after the approval.
These requests included $2,000 for the sunscreen awareness initiative and $550 for a canopy for the math factor club. This request caused debate with some senators noting that the passing of this request would mean the Hispanic Area Council’s request would not pass and asked the senate to weigh the benefit of the request to the community.
Others noted the first come first serve basis the requests have been handled with up to this point. Genesis Vargas, the Hispanic Area Council’s representative for the meeting said the club had tried to file the request much earlier but it was delayed due to miscommunications from the senate to the club on how to file. It was mentioned that the math factor club also submitted their request earlier but it had not been proposed until the last meeting. Eventually it was decided that both earlier requests would be approved for the full amount and the remainder of the budget was given to the Hispanic Area Council.
“I think it’s hard because Senate has been doing this all year round, but also I think we are not putting enough emphasis on what is actually important for students,” Vargas said. She expressed frustration with trying to navigate the recent legislature and feeling that the club does not have support from the senate.
