March Madness begins
March madness began March 1. The women’s team won their first tournament game and lost the second. The men’s hockey team will be going to St. Louis, Missouri, for nationals on March 12-18.
Mo’ money, mo’ discussion
On Feb. 23, Black Scholars United and the African Caribbean Student Union requested $859.45 for “Fall in Love with Leadership,” a paint night that also taught black history. This request was passed .The remaining estimated budget is $6,120. Executive Vice President Landon Coombs said the senate intends to use all of the budget within their final six meetings.
On March 9, the Native American Student Association requested $1,422.50 for shirts to be sold at their Pow Wow on March 14. This request was passed as well. This request is made annually for this event.
Getting slimy at the Bell Tower
There was slime and cornhole by the Stewart Bell Tower March 10 for Wellness Week. After much discussion, according to Weber State Student Association Student Body President Mia Foster, the week will also include a petting zoo.
Changing up the constitution
The WSUSA Constitution was presented by Anyssa Reyes, who said it had not been updated since 2021. While many other changes were proposed the one that sparked the most conversation was adding a section permitting volunteer positions for WSUSA. Reyes said these volunteers would not be compensated unless they meet all the requirements of needing a minimum 2.0 GPA.
She said this would allow for students who do not meet eligibility requirements such as full-time student status to still participate in leadership. These volunteers would be approved by the executive vice president and would serve in roles that were not elected. The senate opted to review the revised constitution and vote during their next meeting.
Possible campus cleansing
A resolution for a “Wellness Drink Initiative,” which would provide healthier alternatives to drinks on campus. This resolution was discussed and it was concluded that it would be voted upon during the next meeting once more research has been done. These drinks would initially only be available in one or two locations before being evaluated for desirability.
Senate meetings are held every Monday from 2 p.m. until around 3 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Shepherd Union in room 404. Students are welcome to participate and voice their concerns or opinions.
