While Weber State University offers over 200 programs, these 10 have caught the eye of the most students. The top 10 most popular degrees are nursing, computer science, health sciences, programming essentials, radiography, medical laboratory sciences, professional sales, criminal justice, Spanish and communication, according to University Registrar Cori Horne.
Several of these 10 fall under the Dumke College of Health Professions. “Healthcare is needed and it keeps changing as we speak. We always have people who need their services,” Dean of the college Yasmen Simonian, Ph.D. said.
Simonian said the college is excited to launch a psychiatric nursing program, which is something that the healthcare community has asked for. She advised anyone interested in health professions to visit their website or meet with their advisors to explore the available degrees.
The second most popular degree is computer science, which professor Hugan Valle Ph.D. has said has “been growing tremendously,” over the last 16 years. He explained that this growth had slowed somewhat due to the fear of AI, but the department is preparing to combat that.
“What we are trying to do right now is to see what areas we can live with more flexibility within the bachelor’s or even the associate’s to prepare students for what the job requires them to do today,” Valle said.
Much further down the list, at the 10th most popular degree, is communications. “I think the major offers a chance to really explore different things that are meaningful to students,” Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities Deborah Uman said. “They’ve done a really nice job of showing the career opportunities, making sure that students do internships and they do high- impact programs.” She also commented on the hands-on learning opportunities students can gain, such as Studio 76, KWCR, or The Signpost.
For those who prefer to work from home, criminal justice offers a bachelor’s degree fully online. According to department chair Molly Sween, this was in an effort to aid in the work-life balance of students who are working or have a family while pursuing a degree.
Sween said that going forward, the department is reviewing the curriculum to see what will best prepare students for the job market. She also noted that the department is trying to give students more research opportunities, as well as internship and capstone experiences.
She advised students not to hesitate to reach out to advisors or other faculty when they are struggling. “Never be prideful, ask for help, connect with advisors,” she said. “We have advising for all levels of your experiences at Weber State University.”
While these may be some of the most popular, Weber State has hundreds of degrees to choose from. Weber offers resources such as the Strong Interest Inventory to help students find their major, as well as talking to advisors from the colleges, as recommended by representatives of the college.
