In a season known for powdery days and packed ski-lift lines, this winter has unfolded with bare hillsides and unseasonably warm temperatures across much of Utah.
Snow levels across the state remain far below the seasonal averages, as a result of the prolonged warmth and limited snowfall over the winter season. Much of the fallen precipitation arrived this season as rain rather than snow, leaving muddy ground and minimal snowpack.
The visual contrast has been striking. Ski resorts are operating on limited ski slopes, while hikers and cyclists continue to use trails typically buried under layers of snow at this time of year. While throughout the valley, Utahns enjoy warm afternoons more reminiscent of a spring day than midwinter.
While late season storms could still change conditions, these images reflect a season already defined by absence — devoid of snow, of storms and the typical Utah winter.
