Last week sophomore Sara Hingsberger was an unstoppable force for the Weber State University softball team, ending up in the team’s record books for her performance.
In five games against Utah Valley University and University of North Dakota, Hingsberger batted .714 (10-14) with four doubles, a home run, seven runs batted in and nine runs scored. Two of her runs scored ended up being game-winning runs for the Wildcats.
“I made adjustments because I had just come out of a slump. I was just really trying to focus on the small things and when I’m in the game not worry about mechanics,” Hingsberger said. “I really just focused on having (the pitcher’s) back and we had a really great week as a team.”
Her performance earned her Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors, and on Tuesday Hingsberger became the first player in team history to be named the NFCA Division I National Player of the Week.
“I actually didn’t even hear it at first, and then I didn’t even know what it was,” Hingsberger said about hearing she won the award. “But it’s really exciting. It makes me want to work even harder.”
Hingsberger is just the second player from the Big Sky Conference to earn National Player of the Week honors this season—Idaho State University outfielder Kacie Burnett was named National Player of the Week earlier this month.
On the season, Hingsberger is batting .389—seventh in the Big Sky Conference—with eight doubles, three home runs, 21 RBI and 27 runs scored.
Hingsberger and the Wildcats return to action on Friday when they host Portland State University in a double-header. The first game starts at 2 p.m.
“I think the key for us this weekend is just play as a team,” Hingsberger said. “If we’re struggling hitting just make those adjustments, have each others backs and just have fun.”
