A no-hitter, two mercy rule wins and a walk-off win is how the Weber State University softball team started its conference schedule this weekend against the University of North Dakota.

Playing at home for the first time this season, senior pitcher MaCauley Flint threw her first no-hitter of the year in the series opener. The Wildcats won 10-0 to pick up their first mercy victory of the series.

Flint said afterwards that she was excited for her no-hitter but was more excited for her team and what their future holds.

“This weekend was so big for us. We came out and started on a great note, which sets the tone for conference,” she said. “This builds my confidence in myself a lot, but the confidence I have in my team is through the roof.”

Weber State head coach Mary Kay Amicone was excited for Flint and her performance, saying that it had a big impact for the team and helped set the tone for their defense.

In the second game of the series North Dakota jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Wildcats continued to battle until the final swing. Sophomore Sara Hingsberger hit a double to drive in fellow sophomore Aubrey Whitmer to tie the game at 4-4.

“I was trying not to think about it too much. I told myself I would do whatever I had to in order to get the runner in,” Hingsberger said. “Most importantly, I didn’t let the pressure get to me. I kept all the pressure on the pitcher and just had the mindset to have fun and trust myself.”

Sophomore Mackenzi Corta stepped up to the plate next and hit a walk-off base hit into left field.

“When I got to the plate all of the pressure was gone. With Sara in scoring position, I just wanted to put the ball in play,” Corta said. “After the walk-off it was such a cool feeling to see the team running out on the field. It was a great team win.”

Flint pitched in the last game of the three-game series and picked up her second win of the weekend. The team had their second mercy win of the series with an 8-1 victory.

“We just continue to take it one game at a time.” Flint said. “And we always try to play at our level. Consistency is key. I’m really excited about this team. We are relentless.”

The Wildcats’ wins this weekend extended their winning streak to seven.

Amicone was thrilled about her team’s performance this weekend, but still feels they have a long way to go before they are where they want to be. The Wildcats (22-10, 3-0 conference) play their next game at home on Tuesday against BYU (20-8).
