The term “picture-perfect” is often used to describe something that has no flaws. For Weber State University senior and right-hander MaCauley Flint, “pitcher-perfect” would be the better term to use after her performance at the Grand Canyon Invitational over this past weekend.

“I felt like, especially as a team, we came out and did really well,” Flint said. “I’m really happy with the team. It’s still early, but so far I’ve seen so many great things this year. It’s easy to play as a pitcher when your defense is so good behind you and the hitters are putting up a bunch of runs.”

In four appearances at the tournament, Flint struck out 12 batters and walked four more in 11.2 innings pitched. She picked up her second win of the season in the Wildcats’ first game of the tournament against California State University, Northridge as she threw a complete game against the Matadors. In the winning effort, Flint struck out eight batters in seven innings pitched, allowing six hits and only one run as the Wildcats came away with the 3-1 victory.

Flint came back onto the mound later in the day after the win against CSUN to pick up her first save of the season in a 10-9 Weber State win against Grand Canyon University. The Wildcats had entered the seventh inning with a 10-7 lead, but the Antelopes hit a two-run home run to make it a 10-9 game and then the next two batters reached base on a single and a hit by pitch. After GCU advanced its runners to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt, the Wildcats turned to Flint to preserve the win. Flint went on to pick up the save after getting the next two Antelope batters to both hit infield pop-ups to end the game.

Flint went on to make two more starts for the Wildcats in the tournament, striking out four while walking four batters and allowing three runs in four innings pitched.

After finishing the weekend with a stat-line of 11.2 innings pitched, one win, one save, 12 strikeouts, four walks and a 2.40 Earned Run Average, Flint was named the Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week.

“It’s great. It really is a team effort,” Flint said on being named Pitcher of the Week. “There were a couple of hard hit balls that my team made (plays on) and there were so many double plays this weekend, and if things went differently, I probably wouldn’t have been (named Pitcher of the Week).”

The Wildcats (5-5) will look for continued success from Flint this weekend as the team travels to southern California to compete in the Louisville Slugger Invitational. The Wildcats’ first home game of the season will be their conference-opener against University of North Dakota on March 20. Looking forward to conference play, Flint said that she felt confident the team will perform well this season.

“I’m excited to see what we have in store for conference play,” Flint said. “I feel like we have a lot to offer, and I’m excited.”
