October is a special time for food. Yes, it means candy and sweets but more importantly, but it also means all things turn pumpkin flavored. Here are a few great pumpkin treats I love.
Pumpkin coffee
Many people gauge the beginning of the fall holiday season by the release of Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte. SaltRock Coffee in Ogden offers some of finest specialty coffees around. I use to travel from Salt Lake just for a cup of SaltRock’s popular morning after pumpkin pie frappe. Wherever you choose to purchase your pumpkin coffee, it is definitely a must-have treat for the season.
Pumpkin bagels
I used to eat bagels every morning for breakfast. As a busy college student I didn’t have time to pick up a hot meal every day. Pumpkin was my favorite flavor. I used to slather those toasty halves in pumpkin cream cheese for double the pumpkin goodness. Pumpkin bagels are a simple way to enjoy the flavors of fall on-the-go.
Pumpkin pancakes
The idea of pumpkin for breakfast might seem a bit odd, but it’s absolutely delicious. Imagine the shock on my 5-year-old’s face when we were eating pumpkin pancakes for breakfast. He loved them. They can be slathered in traditional maple syrup or they can be given the star treatment with cream cheese and powdered sugar. Either way, they are a perfect for a hot, Saturday morning breakfast during the fall.
Pumpkin chocolate chip doughnut
Sometimes, I see something on the Internet and instantly fall in love with it. Such is the case with the pumpkin chocolate chip doughnut from Beyond Glaze, a doughnut shop on 24th Street. I’d admired this doughnut from afar all month long until I finally broke down and bought it. This doughnut is quite possibly the greatest doughnut on the planet. Beyond Glaze is known for its quality, gourmet products and at $2 a piece, it is a doughnut worthy of respect.
Mom’s homemade pumpkin roll
It might be said that my mom can’t cook, but she is famous for the five meals she has mastered. What my mother lacks in culinary cognition she redeems in her ability to bake sweets. I anticipate the fall season every year for just one slice of her signature, savory pumpkin roll. I remember as a child loading up that old brick fireplace and enjoying a fresh slice of pumpkin roll as I watched those flames dance around. Mom’s pumpkin roll brings something that cannot bought: memories of childhood.
