Weber State football wide receiver Shaydon Kehano is this week’s Signpost Athlete of the Week after he led the Wildcats in their home-opening loss to North Dakota State with nine receptions for 88 yards.

“I honestly feel I did well this game, I had nine catches for 88 yards,” Kehano said. “As a team, I felt like we had our opportunities there. It should have been a closer game, but things happen. I did whatever I could to help the team out for our first home game.”

Kehano entered Saturday’s game 20th all time among Weber State career receiving yard leaders with 1,367 yards. By the end of the night, he had jumped to 17th all time, passing former Wildcat Dave MacGillivray (1,395 yards from 1967-68), Cam Quayle (1,414 yards from 1994-97) and Bryant Eteuati (1,430 yards from 2005-08). Kehano is now the first Wildcat with at least 1,400 career receiving yards since Joe Collins finished his career in 2010 with 1,501 yards.

Two games into the season, and Kehano is on pace for career-high numbers. At this current pace, Kehano will finish his final year with the Wildcats with 90 receptions and 1,122 yards receiving. Ninety receptions would be the third most in a single season, trailing Peter Macon (92 in 1989), and Alfred Pupunu (93 in 1991). For a single season, 1,122 yards receiving would be the fifth most to ever be scored by a Wildcat, the record being held by Tim Toone who had 1,525 yards receiving in 2008.

With these predicted numbers for Kehano, he is also poised to climb high up the all-time career leaders list in his final season with the Wildcats. If he finishes this season with 90 receptions, that would give him 161 for his career, the fifth most in school history. He would also be the second Wildcat in the last 18 years with 150 or more career receptions (Tim Toone 2006-09). If he finishes 2014 with 1,122 yards, he would finish his career with 2,390 career receiving yards, fourth most in Weber State history.

“Wow. Just from you telling me that is the first time I’ve heard this,” Kehano said about his potential to make it into the school record books. “Honestly I’m not really worried about the stats. You know, just win these games and get Weber State back to the top. But it does feel good to hear that.”

Kehano and the Wildcats will hope for their first win of the 2014 season this Saturday as they travel out west to take on the Sacramento State Hornets. Despite a 0-2 start to the season for Weber State, Kehano is positive that the team has a good season in store.

“I’m feeling great about this team. This is probably one of the best teams I’ve been a part of, and it’s all because of Coach Hill’s coaching staff,” Kehano said. “They have us feeling confident, and even though we’ve lost these two games, there’s a lot of things we can build off of. We have opportunities there. We just need to take advantage of it, and not mess it up.”
