Jones leads WSU golf team again

The Weber State University men’s golf team shot a two-round total of 604 to take 20th place in the Cowboy Classic at the Talking Stick Golf Club earlier this week.

The Wildcats shot 312 in the first round on a windy Monday. The winds continued to affect play and resulted in the cancellation of the second round, which was supposed to take place Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, the Wildcats were 20 shots better than they were the day before, shooting 292.

Gonzaga University shot a total of 574 to earn the team title, finishing six shots clear of the University of Colorado. The University of California, Santa Barbara’s Glen Scher shot rounds of 70 and 68 to win the individual competition. Scher was the only player in the field to break par for the tournament.

Jeff Jones led WSU for the second-straight tournament. The senior opened the tournament with a round of 73 in Monday’s windy conditions. It was the sixth-best round of the day. He improved on his first round on Tuesday, shooting a score of 71 for a total of 144. Despite lowering his score on the second day, he slipped to 14th place in the tournament.

Jordan Herzog shot rounds of 79 and 70 to tie for 40th overall at 149, while Colton Dallimore shot 154 to tie for 80th. Matt Wahlen tied for 100th place at 158, while Michael Johnson tied for 121st with a total of 165.

Next, the Wildcats will travel to Provo for the Cougar Classic hosted by Brigham Young University. That will be the final tournament before the America Sky Golf Conference Championships, which will take place at the end of the month in San Antonio, Texas.
