Studio 76 airs new show highlighting Ogden food joints

Studio 76 is debuting a new TV show today that focuses solely on good local food. The show, Train City Eats, will be broadcast on Weber State University’s Studio 76 YouTube channel, as well as the Train City Eats Facebook page, with new episodes every other Friday at noon.

According to creator Zach Russell, the show is a way for him to “give back to Ogden” and show off some of the city’s hidden gems as far as food goes.

“Even though I am technically doing it for school, I am really doing it because the people of Ogden deserve to be recognized for their diversity,” Russell said.

Paul Castleberry and Brandon Lamb are the other two behind this operation. Castleberry is the producer and editor as well as photographer for the show, and Lamb does the audio.

“I love the friendships that have been made (through Train City Eats),” Lamb said. “We really do have a lot of fun doing the show. Great food, great friends, making great experiences.”

The series is a new addition to Studio 76, which originally used to be a news production-based channel only. Last spring, however, instructor Drew Tyler and his students decided to expand what they offered.

“I let the cat out of the bag when it was decided in the spring that we would actually be changing to a production studio and produce not only news, but entertainment content,” Russell said.

As far as what to expect out of Train City Eats, Russell acts as the host of the show and highlights some places Wildcats might not know about.

“The show will not go to chain restaurants,” Russell said. “Just because a place is trendy does not always mean the food is good.”

Lamb said the show adds a little more excitement to the everyday life of a college student.

“Making a show like Train City Eats really helps make college life a little more fun and less mundane,” he said.

Russell, who said he’s spent his entire life trying local restaurants, mostly selects the restaurants featured in the show. With a different restaurant featured each episode, Wildcats will need to tune in each week to see what surprise Train City Eats has in store.

“I’ve been scouring Ogden’s food scene since I was 4, so I have a good feel for what’s what,” Russell said. “As a boy, my mom and I used to go out to eat often. It’s one of my best memories growing up.”

The task of putting on a TV show requires a great amount of time and effort, but despite the time commitment, the job can be very rewarding, according to Lamb, who said there’s nothing quite as good as helping someone out.

“Some of these eating places are one person running everything,” Lamb said. “To be able to hear how they all got started and the passion they have for the food they make and the satisfaction they get . . . it makes us feel like we are helping the owners just a little bit by sharing with the community what they have to offer.”

Train City Eats airs today on Studio 76’s YouTube channel Facebook page. Students and community members are encouraged to tune in every other Friday to find out more about what WSU’s home town offers for a good meal.
