“The Moment” is a mockumentary that shows British dance pop artist Charli XCX preparing for her tour, riding off the high of her hit album “brat” released on Jun. 7, 2024. Aidan Zamiri, director and co-writer, shows his ability to create a stylized retelling of a generational era in dance pop.
Given his experience in directing the music video to “360,” a popular single and the opening track on “brat,” the visuals coincide perfectly with Charli XCX’s unique sound, featuring a showy neon color palette and strobing transitions between scenes.
“The Moment” delves into the life of being a world-famous contemporary pop artist, with Charli XCX playing a fictionalized version of herself and having to choose between the different creative directions that pull her tour down different paths.
This is all while walking a tightrope over the pitfalls of substance abuse, social media slip-ups and the unrelenting schedule of a celebrity. Viewers are swept up and taken along for the ride in an almost dazing sequence of fast-paced cuts, lively humor, and the ugly downsides that come with luxury and fame.
While the drawbacks of its slightly meandering narrative and unresolved character arcs might be off-putting for the discerning moviegoer looking for an undeniable cinema classic, it is a fun viewing experience and worth a watch for its avant-garde creative vision alone.
