Nick Corrigan is a sophomore from Green River, Utah, studying athletic training. In his free time, he is a member and recruitment manager for the Weber State Rugby Club. When asked why he studies athletic training, Nick told quite the story.
“Back in high school, I was at basketball practice, and my best friend on the team collapsed on the ground. We thought his lung had collapsed, and we called the ambulance, but since none of us were trained to help him, we had to just stand there and watch him as he suffered while we waited for the medical professionals. His dad was the coach, and I remember him telling me that he thought he was going to lose his son in that moment. It was pretty scary. He ended up having a heart defect that made his heart stop. It was that incident that inspired me to become an athletic trainer. In small towns like Green River, they lack athletic trainers, and I want to be able to be there when situations like this happen. Had an athletic trainer been at our practice, maybe something else could’ve been done to help my friend.”
