Students participating in April Fools’ Day at Weber State University were on the hunt for more than just the perfect prank.
The WSUSA activities committee put on a campus-wide Easter egg hunt April 1 and 2 for the entire student body to participate in. Members of the WSUSA hid 100 plastic prize-filled eggs Tuesday night in various spots on Weber State’s Ogden campus to encourage student involvement, as well as giving them a chance to get a fun treat.
“We wanted something that would be different and make the journey to class a little more exciting for students,” Amina Khan said.
The eggs were hidden all over the WSU campus for anyone to find, said Khan, the organizer of the egg hunt. Of the 100 eggs hidden, 95 contained small candy prizes and could easily be found lying around campus.
The other five eggs contained a special secret prize and were more skillfully hidden.
The five special eggs, which were shaped like bunnies, contained candy like the other eggs, but in addition the special bunny eggs had a piece of paper inside telling the finder to return the egg to the Student Involved Learning office to receive a prize. The prizes included $20 Megaplex gift cards hidden in four of the five eggs and a grand prize of two tickets to iFLY in the last egg.
“We didn’t want it to be a crazy big event,” Khan said. “It would be simple, but fun. Plus Easter was coming up and what’s more fun than an Easter egg hunt?”
The egg hunt is not the first time WSUSA has done something like this. Last semester WSUSA did a similar campus-wide activity called, “Where’s Waldo?”
For this activity someone from the organization hid a stuffed Waldo the Wildcat on campus and posted a photo hint of the location on Instagram. The person who found Waldo won tickets to see Train in concert when they came to Ogden.
WSUSA Activities Vice President Corbin Wessman said the main purpose of events like “Where’s Waldo?” and the egg hunt is to encourage student involvement around campus, a task Wessman believes is being accomplished.
“The level of student involvement (with Where’s Waldo) surprised me,” said Wessman. “It’s hard to get people involved but right after we released a picture people found Waldo 10 minutes after.”
Ultimately, it is this type of reaction that Khan and Wessman were hoping for with the egg hunt as well. Khan said she believes students were just as involved, if not more involved, in hunting for eggs as they were when trying to find Waldo.
Weber State junior Dustin Elliott found one of the smaller eggs walking to class on Wednesday morning. Not quite sure what to make of the brightly colored plastic egg, Elliott said he picked it up to see what was inside.
“It had some Skittles inside. It was a nice snack and a really fun way to begin my day,” said Elliott. “I was on the lookout the rest of the day to see if I could find any more.”
It is exactly this type of reaction WSUSA hoped to inspire and keep inspiring in Weber State students.
“WSUSA is here for the students. We have great people here at Weber State and we always want to give back as much as possible,” Khan said. “So everything we plan is with students in mind and with good intentions.”
