With all of the construction that has happened on the Ogden campus of Weber State, it is hard to remember that the Wildcat Center will be celebrating its one-year anniversary. The center, which gives students and members of the community a chance to work out, shoot hoops with friends and hosts classrooms for student use, is giving runners and non-runners alike an opportunity to participate in the celebration.
To commemorate this event, the Wildcat Center will be hosting a 5k run and kids’ mile dash on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. Emily Davidson, the marketing and operations coordinator for Campus Recreation, felt it was only right to host some sort of athletic activity to celebrate.
“The Wildcat Center was added on last year and the run is to honor and pay respect,” Davidson said. “We now have a facility to operate out of and students now have a place to come and work out. A place where they won’t be bumped out and can work out whenever they want. We decided to honor it by doing what we do best and do active activities.”
The race will be begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, with registration taking place from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Registering on the day of the run will cost $25.
“There will be a station set up on campus on Friday for those people who want to register,” Davidson said. “This is a great race for someone who just decides they want to run a 5k on a Friday afternoon.”
Even though the race will not be timed, the top three male and female finishers will receive prizes. The other prize will go to the runner with the best Wildcat-themed outfit. The winner of that prize will receive a Fitbit activity wristband.
“We hope to continue to have this year every year,” Davidson said. “We hope this is a tradition that will continue for a while.”
