It’s summer time! Although the fall semester starts in less than seven weeks, there is still plenty of time to go out with friends and have fun. Here are some simple sports that can be played with four people or 24 people.
Bocce Ball
Bocce is a fun, easy game to play out at a park on a sunny afternoon. You begin the game by taking the target ball, called the jack, and throwing it out onto a field. Then, the two teams take turns rolling or throwing their bocce balls out in the direction of the jack, with the object of getting as close to the jack as you can. Whichever team ends up rolling their ball closest to the jack, gets a point. From there you throw the jack out again, and continue to play for as long as you want.
Ultimate Frisbee
Similar to soccer, ultimate frisbee is a high-flying, fast-paced game for all to enjoy. Players run from one end of the field to the other, throwing the frisbee from teammate to teammate. The catch though, is that once you have the frisbee, you have to stop moving. You can pivot on one foot in order to get around defenders, but until you have thrown the frisbee, you must remain still. If the frisbee gets dropped, or intercepted, the other team gains possession, and can drive the other way down the field. Players score when they catch the frisbee past the goal line.
Frisbee Golf
A much slower game than ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf gives you all the fun and enjoyment of golf, without having to get dressed up and pay club fees. Frisbee golf is pretty straightforward, you try and hit the target with a frisbee, and whoever completes the course with the fewest throws wins. At some parks, there are designated frisbee golf courses with metal cages as targets, and listed pars for each hole. But if there isn’t a marked course nearby, it’s easy to create your own. Lightposts, trash cans, doors, and trees are just a few ideas for targets.
Half-Court Basketball
One-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-three, you can have almost any number of players with half-court basketball. Played exactly like regular basketball, half-court basketball can keep the game fun and exciting even with only a few people by, obviously, limiting the size of the court. The only difference with half-court, is when the ball changes possession, the team with the ball needs to take the ball to either outside the three-point line or the top of the key (depending on the rules set) in order to clear the ball before you can shoot.
Flag Football
Can’t wait for football season to start? Grab some friends and family and head out to the park to play some flag football. Flag football has all the fun of playing football with fewer injury risks. Instead of tackling the ball, carrier defenders will attempt to grab a flag that the player has on their body, whether it’s a bandanna hanging out of a pocket or a weighted belt. All the rules from regular football remain in place, minus the tackling. If you can’t find enough flags for all players, an alternate version is touch football, where you “tackle” the ball carrier with either a one-hand or two-hand touch (depending on the rules set) on their body. Just be prepared for the inevitable arguments over whether the defender actually touched the ball carrier, or just grabbed some loose clothing.
