Defense shines in first spring football scrimmage

The Weber State University football team held its first full scrimmage of spring camp Friday afternoon at Stewart Stadium.
“I really liked the way the defensive played,” said WSU head coach Jay Hill. “They had some key plays, caused some turnovers and really made the offense work. There were several guys that really stepped up and made some big plays on defense. On the offensive side, we had too many penalties and mistakes. We need to eliminate the mistakes and take care of the ball. That’s their No. 1 job on offense, but they didn’t handle that today and need to get that fixed.”
On defense, several Wildcats stepped up and made big plays. Spencer Unga had an interception returned for a touchdown. WSU also had an interception and forced a fumble. Deon’tae Florence and Dustin Martin each recorded sacks.
Sophomore quarterback Austin Chipoletti threw for 53 yards and Jadrian Clark threw for 76 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Fields at the end of the scrimmage.
Bo Bolen had eight carries for 52 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown. New Wildcat running back De’Saan Hardwick rushed for 31 yards. Shaydon Kehano had three receptions for 25 yards.
The Wildcats will have two more weeks of spring practice and another scrimmage April 12. Spring practice will conclude with the annual Purple and White Game on April 19.
Berry leads team in points, assists during All-Star Game
Weber State University senior Davion Berry had a strong showing at the 2014 Reese’s College All-Star Game on Friday in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Berry led the West team in scoring and tied for a game high in scoring at the game held in Arlington, Texas. The game featured 21 of the top senior college basketball players in the country.
Berry, the 2014 Big Sky MVP, came off the bench and played 20 minutes in the game, leading his team with 15 points. Berry was 4-of-10 from the field and knocked down one 3-pointer. He also was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and shot the most free throws of any player in the game.
Berry also led the team in assists with four and had two rebounds and one steal for the West team, which was coached by Stanford University’s Johnny Dawkins. The East defeated the West 87-75 in the sixth annual Reese’s College All-Star Game.
