After two wins Thursday and Friday, the Weber State University hockey team did not cool down as it took on Boise State University and Montana State University on Saturday and Sunday. The Wildcats won both matchups, 10-2 over BSU and 10-3 over MSU.

“I thought the last two games were some of our best games that I’ve seen us play,” said sophomore Dax Hobbs. “Our passing was right on. I’ve never seen us pass that well all season. I think that those are the perfect two games to set us up for the three games we have this weekend.”

WSU junior Phill Jennrich continued his stellar play. He scored eight goals over the weekend, including four in the games against BSU and MSU.

WSU head coach Joe Pfleegor said he was impressed with Jennrich’s play over the past week.

“The thing is with Phill, when he plays and he’s focused on the game, and more importantly, when he’s having fun, it’s going to show,” Pfleegor said. “He’s been incredible.”

Hobbs contributed three goals in the last two games, along with freshman Kody Rodriguez, who also had an assist.

“I thought that we started the season out kind of slow,” Hobbs said. “We are gradually starting to get better and better. Our lines have a lot more chemistry between each other. Our passes are starting to get better. Hopefully we keep building on it just like this.”

The Wildcats have seen increased success on their power-play goals, seemingly finding the net every chance they get.

“We just switched up the power play a little bit,” said senior Braxton Green, who scored two goals over the weekend. “We changed the players out, and it’s definitely helped. The past couple games, our power play has been 80 percent, which is huge.”

Pfleegor said he has seen increased production from multiple players this year.

“At this time last year, we had three guys with 10 or more points; now we have eight,” he said. “That’s good to see. Last year it was Dax, Braxton and Jeremiah Holmes. We even have three freshman in double digits.”

With the two wins, WSU stayed in first place in the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League with an undefeated record of 6-0-2. The team also moved into an overall winning record at 7-6-2.

The Wildcats will look to improve on the little things in three more home games over the weekend, a Friday night game against the University of Utah and a doubleheader against Arizona State University on Saturday and Sunday.

“We just need to come together and play a whole 60 minutes,” Green said. “I think that’s been our biggest problem, that we have just a couple minutes where we were kind of lackadaisical and they’ve been able to score. Also penalties — the last nine or 10 goals that teams have had against us have been on the power play.”
